Sector study and growth plan for advanced material electronics
Sector definition, innovation capacity, and roadmap for future growth

Supporting growth and development in the advanced materials electronics sector in North East England
The challenge
Durham County Council sought to better understand and support the advanced materials electronics (AME) sector in North East England.
With UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UK SPF) backing, they needed a clear sector definition, insights into innovation capacity, and a roadmap for future growth.
Why it’s important
The advanced materials electronics sector is a key driver of technological innovation, economic growth, and industrial competitiveness.
Identifying opportunities and challenges within the region would allow the council to design targeted support that maximizes the sector’s potential and attracts investment.
Our approach
We conducted a comprehensive sector study, mapping businesses and innovation hubs through:
- Patent data analysis
- A business survey to collect primary data
- Regional business mapping
This provided a robust evidence base defining the sector, highlighting its strengths, and identifying key trends. To develop the sector growth plan, we engaged key stakeholders, including NEAME, a business cluster that emerged from our previous work. This engagement ensures that the plan is practical, industry-led, and aligned with real-world needs.
What were the results?
Our research provided Durham County Council with a clear understanding of the landscape of the advanced materials electronics sector.
The findings shaped a targeted growth plan, ensuring that UK Shared Prosperity Funding is invested effectively to drive innovation, strengthen local businesses, and enhance the region’s competitive edge.
